For the first 6 months your baby should be in the same room as you when they're asleep, both day and night. This can reduce the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). It is important that you keep the same routine for your baby, as babies who are normally slept on their backs but sometimes slept on their fronts are at a great risk of sudden death. A hidden medical cause of night waking is allergies to formula or dairy products. Such as milk-based formulas or in dairy products in a breastfeeding mother’s diet. Clues that milk allergies may be causing night waking (and colicky behavior) are bloating, diarrhea, and a red rash around baby’s bottom.

Ensure your baby is comfortable. Check that the room is at a comfortable temperature for sleeping and make sure your baby isn’t overdressed or underdressed. Getting enough shut-eye each night isn’t just a concern for the parents in the house. When infants don't snooze enough, it can negatively affect both their bodies and minds. Mothers can try and sit up rather than lay in bed to breastfeed in order to stop themselves falling asleep. As most babies breastfeed frequently, mothers risk falling asleep in a more dangerous position than if they had been lying down. Many abandon breastfeeding altogether as they are so exhausted, thereby depriving themselves and their baby of all the benefits that breastfeeding brings. It is advised that a baby should stay in their own cot in the parental room until they are at least six months old. The safest way for a newborn to sleep is on their back, in the feet to foot position unless told to do otherwise for medical reasons. The mattress should also still be firm and flat to keep the baby sleeping safely. Once you've gotten used to your little one's daily and nightly patterns, in the first month or so, you can start giving hints — feeding, rocking, a soothing bath, a lullaby and a story — that tell your little one it's time to settle down, relax and hopefully fall asleep. But most babies can't and shouldn't be put on a sleep schedule until they're at least around 3 or 4 months old. Your infant may have trouble falling asleep because something’s bothering her. It may be outside her body (like noise, bright lights, bad smells, or a room that’s too hot, cold, or stuffy) or inside (like hunger, a stuffy nose, gas, or sore gums). Some babies move out of their caregiver’s room when they move to a crib. This may cause them to experience temporary feelings of loneliness or fear if the baby is going through the normal separation anxiety stage. Babies who are able to soothe themselves back to sleep (“self-soothers”) awaken briefly and go right back to sleep. In contrast, “signalers” are those babies who awaken their parents and need help getting back to sleep. Many of these signalers have developed inappropriate sleep onset associations and thus have difficulty self-soothing. Baby bedtime routines can help your little one develop healthy sleep habits early on, but, as is true with all aspects of parenting, you might face some hiccups along the way. Around four months of age, your baby’s sense of day and night (circadian rhythm) is getting much better, thanks to the fantastic dance of neural messengers in his brain. In the early days, accept that you will probably not get nearly enough sleep. Rest when you can, sleep when the baby sleeps and forget about the housework for now. Leave a little time between your baby’s feed and bedtime. If you feed your baby to sleep, feeding and going to sleep will become linked in your baby’s mind. When they wake in the night, they’ll want a feed to help them go back to sleep. With a baby instinctively wanting to be near or on you, your best chances of getting them down in their sleeping space is to create a “womb-like” environment, eg by swaddling and using a hot-water bottle to warm the sheets – but do take it out before you lie the baby down. Aim for a bedroom temperature that's ideal for a lightly clothed adult. Your baby will fall asleep easily when she’s cosy and comfortable. A child who takes a long time to settle into sleep for naps or at night is usually just struggling with the method being used to “get them” to fall asleep in the first place. That is, the child naturally wants to lie down, close their eyes, and fall asleep, but they only know how to fall asleep with assistance, be it rocking, nursing, strolling, or sleeping next to someone else.
